THEATRE OF WILL

Presents

EXILES FROM PARADISE

At the American Renegade Theatre in North Hollywood

The Play: A controversial dramatization by playwright Willard Simms, EXILES FROM PARADISE portrays the colorful lives of two great American cultural icons of the 1920's and 1930's, Richard Wright and Zelda Fitzgerald. Both are southerners, both are minorities, and both are struggling to escape discrimination, stereotyping, and demonization. By personally experiencing the differences of their native circumstances, the audience comes to appreciate the desperate struggle for acceptance that marked the lives of these two cultural icons: Richard Wright, son of a poor, uneducated, black sharecropper and Zelda Fitzgerald, daughter of a white Alabama Supreme Court Justice. Whatever the personal cost, neither will accept the limited roles that tradition has assigned them.

The Los Angeles Times calls "Elizabeth Karr's theatrical performance... kin to Tennessee Williams' wounded misunderstood ladies." LA Weekly says "Tommy Hicks gives a smoldering performance as the tortured Black author of Native Son."

Author/Director: Willard Simms has worked as a playwright and/or director at such theatres as the Denver Center Theatre, the Long Wharf Theatre, the New Orleans Repertory Theatre, The Edinburgh Arts Theatre, the Southwest Theatre Conference, the BACA Downtown Theatre, and Off-Broadway at the American Jewish Theatre. He has received awards from the Shubert Foundation, the Mystery Writers of America, the Colorado Authors League, Drama-Logue, and the London Stage. He is the author of 11 published plays.

Cast: Tommy Hicks, Elizabeth Karr, Price Carson, E.P. McKnight
